Breaking the Silence

For decades, pro-life leaders have been spreading the message of how abortion hurts women. In this episode, we’ll meet Nancyjo Mann, the first women who had the courage to speak out about how she was hurt by a late-term abortion. We’ll hear her story and learn of her meeting with Dr. Jack Willke, who encouraged and helped her to share her story with the world.

Nancyjo Mann is the former lead singer of the Christian rock band Barnabas. But before she became a singer, Nancyjo found herself the victim of a late-term abortion. When the father of her unborn child left, Nancyjo turned to her family for advice and support. Instead, she found them urging her to have an abortion. On October 30, 1974, Nancyjo consented to having a saline abortion. However, her abortionist never explained the process to her and only later did she realize the magnitude of her decision.

Over the next few months, Nancyjo experienced infections and complications from the abortion. She finally had to undergo a complete hysterectomy due to the damage her abortionist had inflicted. Despite the pain the abortion had caused, Nancyjo found it impossible to share her experience with others, until she met Dr. Jack Willke.

Dr. Willke is the president of the nationwide, educational Life Issues Institute. He and Mrs. Willke are the authors of the book Abortion, Question and Answers: Why Can’t We Love Them Both. He also served as the president of the U.S. National Right to Life Committee for ten years. It was during this time that Dr. Willke met Nancyjo and heard her story. Dr. Willke encouraged her to share her story with others, in the hopes that more post-abortive women would come forward. With his help, Nancyjo became the first women to come forward and speak publicly about how abortion had affected her life.

Nancyjo Mann has faced many trials throughout her life. The hardest was her abortion experience. But with the help of Dr. Willke, she was able to break the silence and speak out about how abortion not only hurts babies, but hurts women as well. Her story not only gave a double argument to the pro-life movement, but has helped millions of post-abortive women continue to speak up and get the help they need.
